In Year 1 this week we have been number bond experts, marble run builders and great team players.

In Maths time we were very excited to get to grips with our new Power Maths books. Learning about ways to add by making 10 first, has been our focus this week. We began the week practising our number bonds to 10, and by the end of the week we were using those to find the answers to lots of different addition questions. We have enjoyed using numicon and tens frames to help us work out our answers practically and we will continue to build on these skills next week.

Monkeys have featured a lot in our Literacy learning this week. We read an information book about Monkeys and this got us thinking about what questions we might like to write. To help us we learnt some new actions to go with the question words who, what and where. As we learnt more and more facts we began to think about making our own Monkey books.

In Phonics I have been really impressed with the way we have been learning our au sound this week. We like to segment the word into boxes called a phoneme frame and we were working hard to segment words like astronaut and August!

In the afternoons we have explored our new RE topic — God's Kingdom. To begin with we reponded to a question, 'If we had a kingdom, what would it be like?' We wrote our ideas on the board and it was great to see words like peace , kind and friendly featuring on the shortlist. On Thursday we recapped our understanding of what a parable is and then began to find out the special message in the parable of the Mustard Seed. From such a tiny seed.....great things can happen.

During Computing this week we listened to a story that introduced us to new computing words like bug, and debugging. We like finding out things within a story setting, and this story enabled us to learnt that a bug is a problem and debugging is a way to fix it. One of the messages within the story was not to give up too. We then had such fun creating our own marble runs and at the same time we thought about the key messages from the story. We first designed the marble run, made it using wood and paper and then we tested it out before the whole of Year 1 had a go on each marble run. What fabulous ideas! We could talk confidently about how well our team work had gone too, well done Year 1.
