In Year 3 this week...

We have worked our socks off in English, learning all about writing instructions.

We began by reading examples of instruction writing; finding out how instructions are set out and all the language features they need. We realised they needed a title, subheadings, bullet points, numbers, time words to order the writing, bossy (imperative) verbs and technical language. Then we made a word bank to support our writing.

Next, we wrote a set of instructions for how to survive in the forest. Thomas said: Our Robin Hood day helped me to imagine surviving in the woods so I knew what to write.

Next week, we will write stories based on Robin of Sherwood.

In maths, we focused on place value and used our knowledge to compare numbers using < and >, and we added 1, 10 and 100 to 3 digit numbers. We were very enthusiastic and EVERYONE met the learning objective! We will continue using place value next week as we work on subtracting 1, 10 and 100 from 3 digit numbers. You can see us working on place value in the photos.

In the afternoons, we learned about Mary Jones and her bible in R.E. We considered what was important to us. There were beautiful responses about child and animal welfare. The children were very clear about the things they would like to change for people, and how they could help.

We also began work on our new science topic: Animals, including humans. We asked how Robin Hood and the Outcasts could be sure they had a healthy, balanced diet in the woodland, and learned about food groups. We played food bingo to reinforce our learning. Aiden said he told his mum all about the food groups needed for a healthy diet. Today, we began to create a study work page all about this.

Next week, we will spend Monday on work about the trenches and the lives of young men from Wybunbury who fought in World War I. You might be surprised by some of their names. This work will be shared with the whole school on Wednesday — Remembrance day.

We will continue to learn more about healthy eating in science and complete more study work too.

Well done year 3. Have a lovely weekend.
