Y3 News: Dragon Spotters!

Home » News » Y3 News: Dragon Spotters!

This week we have been dragon-hunters, speech mark spotters and double digit dividers!

In English this week we have had some BREAKING NEWS! Deadly Dragon spotted in the skies of Wybunbury! That's right, a winged beast has been seen soaring the skies and Year 3 were the local supporters on the scene. We've had a very exciting week investigating, exploring and gathering evidence of the dragon sightings, all of which has helped us to begin to write our newspaper reports! Our week started by looking at a range of real life newspaper reports and highlighting the key features of them! Next, we received some CCTV footage of a mysterious creature on our school playground! In the following days we also found claw marks, giant footprints and even discovered new night vision footage of the beast! We spent time writing interview questions to ask any potential eye-witnesses. Luckily, Miss McCurrie spotted the dragon herself and we were able to interview her! We have now written our introductions and have begun writing the main article to our reports! Next week we will add in quotes and our closing statements! In Maths this week we have been dividing 2 digit numbers by 1 digit, again using our new Power Maths learning! We partitioned numbers using the part whole model to help us with our division methods. This week children used cubes, base 10, numicon and even drawings to help them with their division. We also recapped multiplying 2 digit numbers by 1 digit using our column method! Throughout the week we have also practised various arithmetic questions, it was great to see children using efficient methods to get their answers!

In Book Club this week we had a historical figure focus on Alfred the Great. We used different texts to build upon our knowledge of the famous king. We made sure to use our retrieval skills and talked about the importance of scanning a text for answers.

In Spellings/SPaG this week our focus was on speech and remembering the key points! 66, capital letter, piece of punctuation, 99, new speaker new line! See if you can remember it...

In Geography/Computing this week we learnt all about the Danelaw and the treaty between King Alfred and the Viking King Guthrum! We wrote our own version of the treaty using runes and also used the computers and Google MyMaps to label the Danelaw. We were also able to find Viking place names using our research skills using MyMaps! Check it out! — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2sx9vCiySw

In R.E we recapped the story of the Sower and the Seed from last week. We were able to do this by watching our YouTube video and discussing what we thought Jesus meant by this parable. We also thought about our Fruit of the Spirit once more. We thought about what actions or words we could use to show Goodness and how we could make our school a better place by doing so.

On Friday we discussed homework and completed spellings — our new homework can be seen on this page. We also completed a maths arithmetic quiz and discussed methods and answers! In the afternoon the children enjoyed their final P.E lesson with Mr Turner.

Have a fantastic weekend,

Mr Dale
