Welcome back Year 5

Home » News » Welcome back Year 5

Our first week is done — wow — it's gone by so quickly. Can you believe that you're Year 5 now? It's so great to be your teacher again and I have loved our first week back together.

Our classroom was a hive of excitement on the first day as you were eager to learn what our brand-new topic is . . .the Ancient Greeks. We delved straight into learning and enjoyed the first few chapters of our book and met our new lead character, Elliot Hooper. We then went through the new rhythms and routines of Year 5 and talked about what we were going to do to make our class great. You finished off your first day back with Mr Charlesworth as you donned your P.E kits and headed for the playground to learn about hockey.

On Wednesday, our normal routine began. We started our topic on Place Value in maths and have been learning about the value of digits in numbers up to 1million. We have been reading, writing and comparing these numbers and using our knowledge to solve problems. Today, we then moved onto look at Roman Numerals.

During the week, in English, we have been using the first chapters of our book — Who Let The God's Out — to inspire our work. We tried to get inside the mind of Elliot (the lead character) and write a diary entry.

In our afternoons, we started our Big Art. We are bringing Ancient Greece to life by creating the Parthenon right here in Year 5. We have been using lots of skills: moulding and sculpting newspaper; painting and shaping mod-rock, which is messy but great fun. Yesterday afternoon, we learnt about the Ancient Greek gods and goddesses. We learnt that the Ancient Greeks believed that each god or goddesses had an important role which affected the world they lived in. This afternoon, created algorithms and sequences during our Computing lesson.

Hope you have a great weekend,

Miss P
