Dear dinosaur, we have had a very busy week in reception.....

In PE this week with Mrs swan we have continued with our gymnastic sessions, starting with our stretches and following the leader with energetic moves to music. Once we had warmed up our bodies, we moved around the gymnastic equipment carefully navigating over and under, balancing and jumping off, ensuring that we landed with our arms stretched and our feet together.

We explored percussion instruments in music, practising playing and stopping and using control to adjust the volume. We are looking forward to our performance next week to our parents where we get to show off all our learning and hard work!

In phonics we have explored the 'oo' digraph, with its long and short sound. Through a range of activities, we can now quickly write words with the sounds and compose sentences to match pictures as well as read passages containing words with the 'oo' sound, highlighting them as we read. It was very exciting when we had our reading sessions that many of us could identify this sound in our reading books, well done reception!

In our writing tasks we have labelled parts of different dinosaurs and identified why they may need certain features, writing these explanations into sentences, ensuring we had begun using a capital letter, used our finger to space between our words and ending each sentence with a full stop. We are becoming confident writers, which is lovely to see.

We are continuing our work on writing number sentences in mathematics to match pictorial addition sums and can confidently count on to find the answers. Hopefully when we have mastered this skill we will progress onto subtracting.

The weather has provided us with many wonderful opportunities this week to wrap up warm and explore and observe the changes to our garden, especially the ice formations around our play equipment. We formed quite a team of ice hunters, who collected all the ice samples to share with the class, thank you! I hope your hands have thawed by now?

We have had a new member join our class this week: Steggie the stegosaurus, who loves sleepovers! He has had a very busy week sleeping over at different houses and sharing his adventures each day in his diary. Thank you children for writing in it so neatly for him. He has learnt some new skills this week, in particular, baking cakes! They were absolutely yummy, and we all enjoyed eating them. I wonder what he gets up to this weekend?

In design and technology, we have begun to create our own dinosaur puppets with moving body parts, carefully drawing and colouring our dinosaurs body parts with watercolours. When they are dry, we can cut them out and join together with split pins. Hopefully they will look very scary when we have finished. Rooaaaarrrr!

Have a wonderful weekend reception
Mrs Taylor
