Welcome back reception to our last term together!

We are all very excited to discover our new topic is Ocean life and the seaside. On Monday we looked at our story book 'Flotsam' by Davis Weisner to inspire our learning. Many of us were surprised to discover it is a picture book, leading to lots of discussion as to what we thought was happening. In order to help us write a narrative for some of the pictures in sequence, we created a word bank and added some descriptive words too in order to make it sound exciting for the reader.

We are certainly becoming a class of writers, with many of us impressively writing a full side of A4 and some even using exclamation marks to highlight certain sentences of excitement or shock! Well done to those children who received headteachers awards for challenging themselves to write for a sustained period of time.

In our mathematical learning we have begun to explore the concept of capacity with the understanding that it is the measurement of how much an empty or hollow container will hold.
Through a range of activities that measured liquid and discrete countable materials such as rice and beads we used language to talk about capacity to compare quantities.

Anyone for tennis? In PE with Mrs Swan we have started our preparations for Wimbledon, practicing our ball control and team work!

Today we have explored World Ocean Day which is celebrated around the world on the 8th June. Our new facts discovered from today are that 70% (most) of the earth's surface is covered by water and that there are 5 major oceans. We saw how plastic pollution is making its way into steams and rivers and eventually into the seas and oceans. This years theme is 'Prevent Plastic Pollution' and so we talked about how we could reduce, reuse and recycle some of our plastic rubbish. Reusing plastic waste from home we have created some recycled sea creature art.
They look amazing!

Also today, we wore our red and white coloured clothes as part of Football Day in Lewis' memory. Thank you for the donations made for the Team Lewis trust, they are always very much appreciated. I think we impressed the year 5 school council group with our dribbling and scoring skills. We even managed to get a winner on the Cross Bar Challenge!

Enjoy your weekend
Mrs Taylor
