A busy week in Y6

Home » News » A busy week in Y6

Another busy week in Y6, from bird watching with our buddies to listening carefully to a NSPCC workshop, we have had it all going on in our classroom.

I am so proud of the determination Y6 are showing when solving reasoning problems in Maths. We have used real life situations to discover, share and discuss our strategies and prove our methods. Working with decimals has had its challenges but we have used our fractions knowledge to support this learning. We will complete this unit next week and move onto percentages.

Our descriptive writing is coming along nicely. We have used images to put our storm into time order and thought carefully about our word choices. Figurative language is in our minds as we add similes and metaphors to our pieces. We will complete this next week and move onto a new concept.

During our Spag lessons this week we have been learning a Spag song to a well-known pop song -Believer. Y6 have thoroughly enjoyed learning this and are already using it to describe different terminology.

We have continued our discussions this week on inheritance and used different traits to decide which are inherited and those that are not. We found out that migraines can be inherited whilst languages are not. We will now move our science on as we discover more about evolution.

We welcomed the NSPCC into our class this week. Using child friendly resources this session delivered key information and it also allowed our children to discuss different statements and situations.

National birdwatch week has taken place this week across school. Our Eco officers have led the way. Thank you to Aiden for creating such super bird feeders and placing them around school to encourage bird life into our grounds. We spent some time with our buddies in their garden before heading out onto the field. Even during these winter months there was plenty to see. Thank you for sending your children in with binoculars at such short notice, they were a great help.

Formal Friday has taken place as usual today. We have sat an arithmetic paper, times tables test and a spelling test. We have checked all homework and new has been set. I have also gone through our online Spag homework and some MyMaths tasks today, particularly the bar model task.

We have finished our week off with a visit from Mrs Tibbetts. She has focused on why adaptation has developed in certain birds. We finished our workshop off by doing an experiment to decide which sized beaks were the most successful feeders.

Have a brilliant weekend Y6.

Mrs B.
